Frida Beyond the Myth
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, VA
@vmfamuseum
Filled with dramatic photographs, elegant, detailed, attention-commanding self-portraits, fresh still life paintings, portraits of her dog, Xoltol, film of Frida and Diego Rivera during their marriage, a shell-encrusted retablo, and intimate drawings, one of which describes grave injuries caused by a legendary bus accident that changed her life, the exhibit takes you on a journey through from her childhood to death. An arresting photograph of her body was included, but I did not show it here.
There was an interactive area to take photographs on a white bench with the green wallpaper as in one of the photographs of Frida. At the end there was an area for people to make self-portraits of their own. This show offered a new perspective on the brave, strong, iconic woman artist, Frida Kahlo. Well-worth the visit, it runs through September 28, 2025.
